Anabelle’s Story

My name is Anabelle Acosta, I have been suffering migraines headaches since July of 2011. There has not been a day that goes by since then that I do not experience migraines. This ordeal has been very difficult to deal with, since I am the head of my household working two jobs with 80 hours weekly in order to provide. It has been a physical and mental challenge to deal with agony and pain of my illness from the time I wake up to the time I go to sleep. Many nights were spent in confusion and frustration as to why I experienced these symptoms.

I later discovered that I had a large pineal gland cyst through an MRI examination. Migraines were one of several symptoms I felt, others including: visual changes, nausea, and hydrocephalus (intracranial pressure). The cyst is located atop my pineal gland, which is a small pine-shape endocrine gland. The pineal gland is near the center of the brain between two hemispheres, tucked in a groove where two thalamic bodies join. Although the pineal gland is about the size of a grain of rice (8 mm), it manages to regulate the production of melatonin and wake/sleep patterns. Due to the pineal gland’s location, many doctors have told me it’s too dangerous to remove.

With the inability of knowing when my symptoms will come or whether they’ll go away, I realized that I don’t want to experience such distress for the rest of my life. After giving it much consideration I decided to have surgery. Finally after doing some research I found Dr. Shahinian, who has brought both cure and hope into my life. In March, I will be undergoing intricate endoscopic surgery in order to remove the cyst at the world-renowned Skull Base Institute in Los Angeles by its founder. I have chosen the Skull Base Institute because I feel it’s the best place in the world to have this procedure done. The surgery that I will be having is less invasive while also appearing to produce better results than other methods of removal. Despite the hazardous risks involved, I recognize this delicate surgery as my only choice.
